Guilford County Schools plea for more funding

GREENSBORO, N.C.–Guilford County Schools Superintendent Mo Green is asking for an additional $13.6 million in funding for the 2013-13 budget.

“I went to the board and I told them the time is now,” Green said.

The $13 million is a part of the $189 million GCS is requesting from Guilford County Commissioners.

Green says the additional funding would go towards capital improvements, school supplies and employee raises.

“I want the information out, so everyone can know what’s going on,” Green said.

Green is also concerned about Gov. Pat McCrory’s proposal to cut teacher assistants state-wide.

Green says if that happens, the district will have to reduce the days teacher assistants work or eliminate them all together.

“That translates to about 200 teacher assistants. That is a real cut,” Green said.

Guilford County Schools could cut teacher assistant positions

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Teacher assistants across Guilford County are monitoring Gov. Pat McCrory’s proposed state budget.

McCrory wants to hire 1,800 full-time teachers while eliminating 3,000 teacher assistant positions.

The Guilford County School district has more than 1,300 teacher assistants.

The district gave each school with teacher assistants a letter Wednesday evening informing them of the cuts under McCrory’s proposed budget.

The district said one option would be to reduce the number of work days for teacher assistants.  The second option would be to completely eliminate all teacher assistant positions.

Stephanie Branson, a teacher assistant at Brooks Global Studies Magnet School, can’t fathom the idea of not returning to the classroom after summer vacation.

“This is my life.  This is what I went to school for,” Branson said.

Northwest Guilford High School teacher determined to beat cancer

GREENSBORO, N.C.-The history of the United States always stirs a debate in Ray Parrish’s class at Northwest Guilford High School.

It’s a subject he loves and almost had to do without five months ago, but with the help of a teaching assistant Parrish is teaching his class part-time.

“It’s scary sometimes  to know that I’m in this situation, but I keep reminding myself God is in control,” Parrish said.

Just before Christmas, Parrish was diagnosed with Astrocytoma, a form of brain cancer.

Parrish’s diagnosis came while he was preparing his “We the People” debate team for the national championships.

Parrish had a number of surgeries and was forced to stop working during the beginning stages of Chemo.

“The words I kept hearing over and over again is Ray you have 5-10 years,” Parrish said.
