Guilford Co. Schools pay $500k for unpaid meals | News

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — School leaders are considering a plan that will cap the number of meals a student can charge to the school system during the next school year.

According to school officials, during the 2011-2012 school year, over $500,000 was charged to the school system when students were unable to pay for school meals.

Under the proposed plan, parents would be notified when a student exceeds a tab of $17.50 and will be provided alternative meals.

For breakfast student would be offered cheese toast and water. For lunch students would be offered up to 4 servings of fruits and vegetables, a roll and water.

Students would not be eligible for regular menu items until their tab is paid in full or until they are enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program.
